The
Need
In women the two most likely places where
cancer may develop are the breasts and the
uterus. Breast can be easily self examined
and every woman owes it to herself to do it
periodically. Far too many women die from
cancer for no other reason than due to their
utter indifference to their health.
Every woman should know how to examine her
own breasts after each menstrual period.
Remember
Most tumours of the breast are not Malignant
(cancerous) but nobody can tell without
examining these tissues. Having examined her
breasts and finding nothing unusual, she can
then forget all about this until the end of
the next menstrual period. However, if one finds anything unusual or in case of
doubt, she should immediately report to her
health care provider. The earlier any
abnormality is discovered, the better the
chances of the complete cure.
The
method
The nine step of doing the breast self
examination are as shown below :-
Protection against breast cancer is as simple as that.

|

|
|
Carefully
examine the breast before a mirror
for symmetry in size and shape.
Note any puckering or dimpling of
the skin or retraction of the
nipple.
|
Raise
arms over head. Again study
breasts in mirror for same sign.
|
Recline
on a bed with a flat pillow or
folded bath towel under the
shoulder on the same side as the
breast to be examined.
|
|

|

|

|
|
To
examine inner half of breast the
arm is raised over the head. Begin
at the breastbone and in a series
of steps, palpate the inner half
of the breast.
|
Carefully
palpate the area over the nipple
with flats of the fingers.
|
Completion
of examination of lower half of
breast.
|
|

|

|

|
|
With
arm down at side continue
examination of breast by carefully
feeling the tissues which extend
to the armpit.
|
Examine
the upper outer quarter of the
breast with the flat part of
fingers.
|
With
the flat of the fingers examine
the lower outer quarter of the
breast in successive stages.
