 Diabetes Care
From Head to Toe

Diabetics need to take special care of their body.  The American Diabetic Association and other experts recommends the following to protect the EYES, HEART, and FEET:

Diabetes often affects the eyes and may lead to  vision loss or even blindness.  A diabetic must:

Keep his/her blood sugar under control.

Keep his/her blood pressure under normal range.

Get a dilated eye exam. every year by an eye specialist to know whether diabetes has caused any damage to his/her eyes.

Consult an eye physician if :

  • His/her vision is  blurry.

  • he/she  see double or spots or floaters.

  • His/her one or both eyes hurt.

  • He/she  feels pressure in your eyes.

  • He/she  can’t see things all the sides as earlier.

  • He/she has trouble in reading

People with diabetes are twice more vulnerable to high blood pressure than people without diabetes.  For keeping a healthy heart a diabetic must:

Never be obese.

Remain more physically active.

Keep his/her blood pressure within the desirable range–under 130/85 mm Hg or as advised by the health care provider.

Have his/her blood pressure checked at regular intervals.

Must not smoke.

Keep cholesterol level below 200 mg/dl.

Don’t smoke and never over-indulge in alcohol drinking and rich food.

Diabetes can harm the blood vessels and nerves in the feet of a diabetic. In order to keep your  feet healthy, you must:

Keep your blood sugar level within the range recommended by your doctor.

Wash your feet every day and dry  them immediately.

Check for any cuts, blisters, redness, and swelling.

  Never walk barefoot.

  Wear shoes that fit well.

  Avoid shoe pinching.

Wear clean socks that fit well. Make sure that the socks’ seams are in the weight place.

Cut your nails straight across and file the edges.

Don’t cut or treat corns or calluses yourself. Have a doctor remove them.

Shake your shoes before putting them on. A small pebble can lead to problem.
