Impotence is a sexual dysfunction characterized by the inability of the male to attain and maintain erection of the penis sufficient to permit satisfactory sexual performance. In most cases, affected men retain the desire and ability to have an orgasm and ejaculate. Erectile dysfunction replaces the earlier term impotence which was in use.

Causes

Although  age is a factor, it is not an inevitable consequence of aging. It can result from organic, psychogenic and mixed factors.

Factors involved in Erectile Dysfunction

The organic or physical risk factors for erectile impotence  fall into five main groups :

  1. Vascular disorders : Circulatory problems that interfere with  blood supply to the penis including hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), diabetes, high blood pressure and  abnormally raised blood cholesterol.

  2. Lifestyle Factors : Smoking, which exacerbates vascular problems such as high blood pressure, alcohol and drug abuse.

  3. Neurological Disorders :  Including multiple sclerosis and trauma resulting in pelvic or spinal cord injury.

  4. Surgery : (e. g. for prostate disease) and radiation therapy.

  5. Drugs : Some  drugs prescribed to treat high  blood pressure, depression, heart disease, gastric ulcers and cancer.

Overall diabetes is the single most common condition linked with erectile impotence and it is estimated that nearly half of men with   diabetes have some degree of erectile  impotence.

One
Can Avoid It

Diabetic Impotence can be avoided if a diabetic:

  • Takes control of his diabetes. Control on glucose can prevent the complications that lead to impotence.

  • Does not worry about it. Impotence is also psychological. Fear of becoming impotent can itself make a person impotent.

  • Avoids drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. Studies suggest that excessive drinking can cause temporary impotence even in a non-diabetic person.

  • Does not smoke. Smoking cause blood vessels to constrict, or narrow, and the constriction can lead to impotence.

  • Withdraws causative drugs, if any, with the help of the informed healthcare provider. There  are certain drugs used in the treatment of various disorders like high blood pressure which may coexist with diabetes.

  • Seeks early medical help involving the partner whenever possible.
